The unique headline font of ethical clothing company howies has sustainability at its core, beginning life as a Welsh chestnut tree far removed from the technology of the web.
Our starting point was a font with a carved appearance, so we went further to create an actual wood blocked letterform. Sourced in Wales, the home of howies, we found a woodworker and a wind-fallen chestnut tree.
Once the letters were carved, each was burnished and repeatedly wire brushed to enhance the grain. Printed using a mix of ink and turpentine we then scanned, flipped, adjusted and digitised the finished font ready for web use: a fusion of traditional craft skills with up to date technology.
Oh, and why Castan? It’s Welsh for Chestnut.

The folk at Carter Wong a are rare breed of truly original creatives. They have an acute understanding of howies, its soul and purpose. And with smart ideas like the woodgrain typeface they designed for us, the recycled wardrobe project, as well as our website and packaging, Phil and the team have helped us articulate our brand values through some intuitive design and imaginative projects that make people think.
